Eliza Tebo, Wandering Bird Release New Year Music
Eliza Tebo, Wandering Bird Release New Year Music Wammie-winning vocalist, Eliza Tebo wished 2023 a final goodbye with the December 31st release of the emotive new single, “Me and the Sun.”
This newest single is Eliza’s second single released with Washington D.C. record label Wandering Bird Records, the first being a haunting rendition of the Joni Mitchell Christmas ballad “River” released earlier in the year. Both tracks were recorded at Bias Studios in Northern Virginia with the discerning ear of Mark Reiter at the mixing console, and mastered by Alexandr Vatagin who resides, not in Vienna, VA, but rather Vienna, Austria.
Eliza’s 2022 debut jazz EP, released by Strange Woman Records, received the Wammie Award for Best Jazz Album in 2023. As a member of Howard University’s vocal jazz ensemble Afro Blue/Traces of Blue, Eliza performed on season three of NBC’s “The Sing-Off,” as well as at The Kennedy Center, Blues Alley, the B.B. King Blues Club, the Vice President’s official residence and on NPR. She is also one half of acoustic duo Jessica Upstairs, and a member of rock outfit Wandering Bird, but more on that in a moment.
“Me and the Sun” seeks to find the “silver lining in breakups and divorce, wrapped in wood-paneling and shag carpet.” The song leads us from the softer, sadder arpeggios of the acoustic guitar matched with Eliza’s vocals into a full band finale leaving the listeners with exactly the sweet sentimentality and optimism the song intends.
Label manager Jason Cannata performs as a guest guitarist on the single, and Jason and Eliza also collaborate together on the label’s flagship act, Wandering Bird. The band is poised to release their (mostly) eponymously titled new single, “Wandering Birds” on January 12, along with a headlining performance at Songbyrd in Washington D.C. on January 18 with Fanfaire and Adele Marie.
While Eliza’s solo project might fall decidedly within the folk/country genre, with this track especially, Wandering Bird falls squarely in the rock column, with a sometimes wall of sound reminiscent of everything (though not exclusively) that we loved in the 90s. “Wandering Birds” was produced by Jason alongside Kyle Downes and Jay Nemeyer of Sunday Coffee. Many of you may also recognize Jay from dream-pop rockers, Color Palette. Eliza is also working with Sundy Coffee towards the production of her debut pop album, scheduled for release later this year.
“Wandering Birds” is the track that inspired the band’s name, according to Jason. “With heavy themes around disinformation and climate change, ‘Wandering Birds’ is about how the world has changed in ways we don’t understand, and how many of us feel lost and worried about the future.”
